Now that you have your new KeepKey wallet, it's time to set it up so that you can receive your first transaction. This step-through will help you get started with your KeepKey to ensure you secure your cryptocurrency assets.
Initialisation is straight-forward. In fact, the KeepKey was easier to setup than both the Ledger and TREZOR. One of the nicest features is that right out of the box, Keepkey points you straight to their getting started page with the keepkey.com/get-started URL printed on the inside of the packaging. It's a great touch.
STEP 1: The first thing you need to do is download and install the KeepKey Client App from the Chrome web store.
STEP 2: Connect your KeepKey to your computer via the USB cable.
STEP 3: Open Chrome and locate the KeepKey Client App. You can always get to the Apps in Chrome by navigating to "chrome://apps"
STEP 4: From here you pretty much follow the instructions. They will be shown on your computer and via the KeepKey screen at the same time.
Please note that you may need to update the firmware on your KeepKey when it first arrives. If that's a requirement, the KeepKey Client App will guide you through the update. If this is a brand new device you don't need to worry about the warnings about making sure you have access to your recovery sentence.
Once you launch the KeepKey Client Chrome App on your computer, you will be prompted to initialise your KeepKey.
Next you will label your KeepKey. You can always change it later if you need to / want to.
Now it's time to set up your PIN. This can be between 1-9 digits, however KeepKey recommends a PIN of at least 6 digits. At this point you will see a randomised, scrambled keypad on your KeepKey display. This makes sure that a connected computer can never learn your PIN. Locate the number on your KeepKey screen that you want to choose, then click on the corresponding location on the KeepKey App.
You will then have to confirm your PIN. The number placement will have been scrambled again. Simply check your KeepKey display to match up the number locations on the KeepKey App.
This next step is IMPORTANT.
You are now going to write down the 12-word recovery sentence displayed on your device This recovery sentence is the backup for your device. Make sure you are careful to confirm each word is written down correctly and in the correct order. You will only be shown this sentence ONCE.
Make sure you keep the recovery sentence in a safe and secure place. You will need it if your KeepKey is ever lost, stolen or damaged. Anyone who discovers your recovery sentence will potentially have access to your funds.
Your KeepKey is now ready to use and can start accepting cryptocurrency including Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Dash and Namecoin.
- Never divulge your recovery sentence to anyone.
- Store your recovery sentence in a place that is secure from theft, fire or flood.
- Never input your recovery sentence directly into your computer or phone. Do not store your recovery sentence on your computer or phone. Do not email it or private message it to anyone for any reason.
- Use fresh addresses for each transaction. This will provide the highest level of anonymity and security.
- Choose a PIN that is unique and that you can remember.
