Setting up your brand new Ledger Nano S Wallet is a straight forward procedure. The Nano S connects to any computer via USB to keep Bitcoin, Ethereum and Altcoin transactions secure through private keys generated offline within the wallet itself. The Nano S includes Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum and Ethereum Classic companion apps, and other blockchain-based cryptocurrencies. You can send and receive payments, check your accounts and manage multiple addresses for each currency from the same device.
In the box you should find:
- Your new Ledger Nano S Wallet
- USB cable for your Nano S
- Recovery Sheet
Use left and right buttons to navigate through multiple-choice lists, change values or confirm decisions.
Pressing both buttons at the same time means you wish to confirm/continue to the next screen or open an application.
Step 1: Connect your Ledger Nano S
With the USB cable provided, connect your Nano S to your computer and follow the instructions on the small screen on your device. You can choose to create a new wallet, or import a Bitcoin account or an Ethereum account. Whichever option you choose, make sure you observe the on-screen instructions throughout the process, selecting and validating with the two buttons above the display.
Step 2: Choose a PIN
You will now need to choose and memorise a four-digit PIN code. You will then be asked to confirm your PIN. You need this each time you connect your Ledger Nano S.
Step 3: Backup your recovery phrase
Write down the 24 words in the order they appear onto the “Recovery sheet” supplied in the box. This step is REALLY IMPORTANT. Your recovery phrase is the only way you will be able to restore access to your cryptocurrency should you lose your wallet, or it stolen. You will not be able to complete the configuration without confirming you copied the 24 words by selecting some of them as requested. KEEP YOUR RECOVERY SHEET IN A SAFE PLACE. Anyone can gain access to your wallet with a copy of the recovery phrase. Only ever keep your recovery phrase on paper. Never store it on your computer.
Step 4: Install Ledger APPS
Once “your device is now ready” is shown on the Ledger screen, your Nano S is configured. You now simply have to install the Ledger Apps on your computer to use your wallet. You can download the Ledger Wallet Bitcoin Chrome app or the Ledger Wallet Ethereum Chrome App on the Apps page. It takes only a few seconds and any upgrades are free.
Step 5: Your Nano S is ready to use
You can now use your Nano S with your Chrome Apps on any computer, even a compromised one, to send or receive payments. Each transaction will be verified on the embedded display, and validated with buttons.
